The Monarch was originally developed as an extensively updated Mercury Comet for 1975, but the more upscale redesign was renamed Mercury Monarch and introduced as a luxury compact in the wake of the 1973 fuel crisis, which led buyers to value luxury over performance. It was introduced alongside the Ford Granada. The Grand Monarch Ghia, offered from 1975 to 1976, was the highest trim version of the Monarch. It took its name from a former marque of Ford Canada and shared chassis underpinnings with the Comet.
