For 1981 the engine line of the Marquis underwent a revision, with a 4.2 L V8 becoming the standard engine on the base trim Marquis outside of California, while the now optional 5.0 L V8 was offered on Brougham trim Marquis and Grand Marquis four door sedans. The Marquis shared nearly its entire bodyshell with its Ford LTD divisional counterpart, with its own vertically oriented grille. It was offered as a two door sedan, a four door sedan and a five door station wagon.
