For 1974 the grille of the Marquis was redesigned to nearly match that of the Lincoln Continental, in a vertically oriented layout, and the Marquis received five mile per hour rear bumpers. In response to pending safety regulations the four door hardtop was offered for the last time. For 1974 the 460 replaced the 429 outright, and Mercury discontinued the Monterey after the year. The Marquis was the counterpart of the Ford LTD and shared its chassis with the full size Ford.
