For 1983 the fourth generation Marquis was introduced as Mercury shifted the nameplate to the midsize segment to replace the slow selling Cougar sedan and station wagon, with all full size Mercury sedans adopting the Grand Marquis nameplate. The 1983 Marquis shed nearly 9 inches in wheelbase and nearly 16 inches in length, and production shifted to Chicago Assembly and Atlanta Assembly. Sedans had a 2.3 L four cylinder as standard.
