For 2006 the Mariner lineup was expanded with the introduction of the Mariner Hybrid, which reached the market in 2006. On 7 September 2006 Ford delivered a special Presidential Edition Mercury Mariner Hybrid to former President Bill Clinton. The Mariner was still the first generation, a compact crossover SUV and sibling of the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute, offered with four cylinder and V6 engines. The Mariner was a sibling of the Mazda Tribute and Ford Escape, more upmarket than the other two.
