For 1972 the Mercury Montego was fully redesigned with body on frame construction and a shorter 114 inch wheelbase for two door models, and the Cyclone reverted to a performance option package. It included one of two engines, the 351 Q code four barrel Cleveland Cobra Jet rated at 248 horsepower net or the 429 N code four barrel rated at 205 horsepower net. Only 30 Cyclone package cars were produced, and for the 1972 Daytona 500, 12 of the 40 cars were Cyclones.
