To mark its 20th year of production the Cougar underwent an extensive mid cycle revision for 1987, with nearly every exterior panel changed, a compound curved rear window and its own grille with a large cat emblem, reducing the drag coefficient to 0.36. The XR7 dropped the turbocharged engine for the 4.9 L V8, and the LS became the standard trim. Mercury produced 5,002 of the 20th Anniversary Cougar, 800 reserved for Canada.
