For the 1983 model year Mercury introduced the sixth generation Cougar, slotted above the Capri and below the two door Grand Marquis, with a 104 inch wheelbase. It reduced its coefficient of drag from 0.50 to 0.40 compared with the 1982 XR7. A 120 horsepower 3.8 L V6 was the standard engine, with a 130 horsepower 4.9 L V8 returning as an option. The previous Cougar sedan and wagon adopted the Marquis nameplate. The Cougar was a Fox platform luxury sports coupe, the counterpart of the Thunderbird, with a notchback roofline and GS, LS and XR7 trims.
