The 1990 Cougar was the second year of the seventh generation, a five passenger two door personal luxury coupe on the MN12 platform, with the grille extending above the headlamps. LS trim Cougars were offered with a naturally aspirated 140 horsepower V6 and the XR7 with a 210 horsepower supercharged version. Originally slated to launch with dual airbags, it used automatic seatbelts to meet passive restraint requirements. The Cougar was built on the MN12 platform with four wheel independent suspension and shared it with the Ford Thunderbird.
