For the 1971 model year Lincoln Mercury released the second generation Cougar, with Ford benchmarking its design against the four GM A body coupes and placing it in competition with the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. The wheelbase was increased to 112.1 inches, and a 351 Cleveland V8 was the standard engine in two barrel configuration at 240 horsepower. The Cougar Eliminator was discontinued, and the imported Capri was sold through the Lincoln Mercury network.
