For 1966 the rear tailgate of Mercury wagons was updated, marking the debut of the two way Magic Doorgate, shared with all other Ford and Mercury station wagons, which let the tailgate fold down or swing out as a door on the driver's side. The Commuter had this design as the mid level full size Mercury wagon, below the woodgrained Colony Park. It was the lowest priced of the Mercury wagons, below the Colony Park. Its trim lacked the woodgrain panels of the Colony Park.
