For 1971 the Comet name was revived on Mercury's version of the Ford Maverick compact, with a different grille, taillights, hood and badging, and taillight pods shared with the 1970 and 1971 Montego and Cyclone. The base engine was a 170 cubic inch inline six producing 100 horsepower, with a 200 six and a 302 V8 optional. The Cyclone, built from 1964 to 1971, ended in 1971 as the muscle car wars wound down. The fifth generation Comet was the Mercury version of the Ford Maverick, with a different grille, taillights and hood.
