The 1985 Mercury Motorsport Capri was built as a pace car replica to commemorate the 1985 Detroit Grand Prix and the MotorCity 100. The Capri continued in its three door hatchback form with the 1983 bubble back rear window and the 1984 front air dam, in base, GS, RS and Turbo RS forms, as the Mercury version of the Mustang on the Fox platform. It was the Mercury counterpart of the Ford Mustang, with its own front fascia and a vertically mounted grille.
