The first Mazda3 was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 10 September 2003 and went on sale in Japan in October as the Axela, after production had started in June. It replaced the Familia, 323 and Protege as Mazda's compact model and sat on the Ford global C1 platform shared with the European Focus and the Volvo S40. The press liked its handling, styling and interior, but Euro NCAP gave it only four stars, which Mazda later fixed by making six airbags standard.
