The 2009 model year RX-8 was facelifted with more aggressive front and rear bumpers and a new front fascia, new five spoke wheels, and the Renesis II engine, which added a third oil injection port in each rotor housing. The R3 model was introduced again, with Bilstein shock absorbers and a foam filled front crossmember for rigidity. The RX-8 was by then the only rotary engined car Mazda made. The rear freestyle doors open opposite to the front doors.
