Production of the RX-7 ended in Japan in 2002, with the final limited edition Spirit R, built in April 2002 and limited to 1,500 units, which Mazda called the ultimate RX-7. It came in Type A as a five speed two seater, Type B with 2+2 seats and Type C with a four speed automatic. Of the 1,504 Spirit Rs made, 1,044 were Type A. In total more than 800,000 RX-7s were manufactured over the car's lifetime. Mazda organised an internal design competition between its four design studios for the shape of the car.
