In 1989 Mazda offered a special four wheel steering option on MX-6 GTs destined for North America, the only model year of the first generation in which that market received it. The GT also had four wheel disc brakes with optional ABS, and a three way electronically adjustable suspension called AAS. The MX-6 stayed a coupe with the inline four F engines and a choice of manual or automatic transmissions. The MX-6, 626 and Ford Probe were built at joint venture plants, by AutoAlliance in Flat Rock for North America or in Japan for Asia and Europe.
