The Mazda MX-6 appeared in 1987, replacing the 626 Coupe while continuing to share the same chassis. It was a front engine, front wheel drive sport compact coupe on the GD platform. In the United States it came with a 2.2 liter F2 four cylinder engine making 110 horsepower, or a 145 horsepower turbocharged option, while European and Japanese versions used 1.8 liter F8 or 2.0 liter FE engines. Four wheel steering was used on both MX-6 GT models.
