In 2020 the ND MX-5 was in its sixth year of production, offered as the soft top roadster and the Retractable Fastback, with the 181 horsepower engine and dual mass flywheel introduced in the 2019 update. Lightly modified MX-5s were the basis of racing classes such as the Global MX-5 Cup, a Spec Miata series sanctioned by IMSA in the United States. It was created under the design credo of unity of horse and rider. A longitudinal truss called the Powerplant Frame joins the engine to the differential.
