The 750,000th MX-5 was built in March 2004, and the Mazdaspeed MX-5 went on sale as a 2004 model. It is the only factory turbocharged MX-5, making 178 horsepower from a turbocharged 1.8 liter engine, with stiffer and shorter springs, Bilstein shocks and 17 inch wheels, and a quarter mile time of 15.2 seconds. It was built for the 2004 and 2005 model years only. The roadster was built at Mazda's Hiroshima plant. Its lightweight unibody kept the curb weight under 1,100 kilograms.
