The first generation MX-5 continued in 1995 with its pop up headlights and 1.8 liter engine, in the seventh year of a run that began in 1989. It was a light, unibody roadster whose handling made it a popular choice for amateur and stock racing, autocross and club racing, because the nearly even weight balance made oversteer easy to induce and control. The name Miata comes from an Old High German word for reward, and MX-5 from Mazda's experimental division.
