In 1991 the MX-5 was in its third year of sale and on the Car and Driver 10Best list for the second time. Its pop up headlights were unique to the first generation, and the base car came with a five speed manual gearbox, a 1.6 liter engine of 116 horsepower and steel wheels, with the four speed automatic as an option. Mazda sold it in Japan as the Eunos Roadster through its Eunos dealerships. Its lightweight unibody kept the curb weight under 1,100 kilograms.
