A magazine noted that the RX-4 wagon's brakes suffered from the extra 136 kilograms of weight compared to the coupe. The Luce of 1975 was in its fourth year of the second generation, a large and luxuriously equipped sedan that still complied with Japanese government dimension regulations, and which Mazda exported as the 929. The name Luce was taken from the Italian word for light. The Luce was widely exported as the Mazda 929 from 1973 to 1991, as Mazda's largest sedan.
