The US market 1800 produced 98 horsepower and cost 2,280 dollars. Performance with the three speed automatic transmission was sluggish, and unlike the rotary cars the 1800 was a flop. In 1971 imports into the United States were 1,020 sedans and 1,639 wagons. Road and Track said it was solid to the point of being overly heavy. The Luce was widely exported as the Mazda 929 from 1973 to 1991, as Mazda's largest sedan. The name Luce was taken from the Italian word for light.
