When Mazda released the higher spec 929S model for the 1990 to 1991 period, the engine was upgraded to a double overhead cam. The Luce of 1990 was in its fifth year of the HC series, built in two versions to satisfy Japanese regulations on exterior dimensions and engine displacement, with the 3.0 liter V6 in the longer and wider hardtop body. The name Luce was taken from the Italian word for light. In 1991 the Luce was replaced by the Sentia, which was also exported under the 929 nameplate.
