The CX-9 was launched at the New York International Auto Show in 2006 and was built in Hiroshima, at Mazda's Ujina number one plant. It was a three row crossover based on the Ford CD3 platform and fitted at first with a 3.5 liter Ford V6. Although built in Japan it was never sold on the Japanese domestic market, which received the shorter and narrower CX-8 later instead. It was Mazda's largest passenger vehicle at the time.
