In the United States the Cosmo was replaced by the smaller, lighter and sportier Mazda RX-7 after 1978. Mazda America offered the Cosmo from 1976 through 1978 with the 13B rotary engine. The series I cars of 1975 to 1978 were exported, while the series II of 1979 to 1981 was a Japanese domestic sale only. The CD Cosmo was Mazda's largest rotary powered coupe. The Cosmo served as a halo vehicle for Mazda, with the first Cosmo successfully launching the Mazda Wankel engine.
