The Bongo of 1998 was in its sixteenth and last year of the third generation, a cabover van and truck sold as the Mazda E series, the Ford Econovan and the Nissan Vanette. In June 1999 a new generation of Bongo vans and trucks went on sale, adopting the SK platform based on the previous generation. It also formed the basis for the long running Kia Bongo range. The Bongo was also known as the Ford Econovan and Eunos Cargo, and it has been built with rear, middle and front mounted engines.
