In October 1978 the 1,769 cc VC engine of 95 PS joined the range in Japan. The Bongo of 1978 was in its second year of the second generation, a mid engine rear wheel drive van, which Ford sold as the Econovan and Mazda exported as the E1300, E1400 and E1600. It also formed the basis for the long running Kia Bongo range. The Bongo was also known as the Ford Econovan and Eunos Cargo, and it has been built with rear, middle and front mounted engines.
