The Bongo of 1973 was in its eighth year of the first generation, a rear engine cabover van, with the F1000 version's 987 cc engine. The Bongo was named for the African bongo antelope and, a year later, Mazda decided to manufacture a minibus, called the Mazda Parkway, due to the popularity of the Bongo. It also formed the basis for the long running Kia Bongo range. The Bongo was also known as the Ford Econovan and Eunos Cargo, and it has been built with rear, middle and front mounted engines.
