The Bongo of 2022 was in its third year of the fifth generation, a van and truck based on the Daihatsu Gran Max, in a Japanese market where Mazda's own previous generation had been designed in house. The Bongo name is for the African bongo, a type of antelope, and was first used on the van of May 1966. It also formed the basis for the long running Kia Bongo range. The Bongo was also known as the Ford Econovan and Eunos Cargo, and it has been built with rear, middle and front mounted engines.
