The Bongo of 2021 was in its second year of the fifth generation, the van and truck based on the Daihatsu Gran Max, sold in Japan after the nameplate was reintroduced in July 2020. It was the first Bongo not designed in house since the first one of 1966, as Mazda had withdrawn from commercial vehicle design. It also formed the basis for the long running Kia Bongo range. The Bongo was also known as the Ford Econovan and Eunos Cargo, and it has been built with rear, middle and front mounted engines.
