In 1988 the Mitsubishi engine was replaced with a new family of Mazda powerplants, the larger Mitsubishi carbureted engine giving way to Mazda's more powerful 2.6 liter four cylinder fuel injected engine. The new model was named B2600i, with the i for injection. Mazda trucks were rated number one in overall customer satisfaction by J.D. Power for the third consecutive year. In Australia and New Zealand the B series was named the Mazda Bravo and Mazda Bounty, respectively.
