The BMW i3 is a battery electric city car that BMW produced from 2013 to 2022 as the first model of its dedicated i sub-brand for electrified vehicles. It was built around a passenger cell made largely of carbon fiber reinforced plastic to offset the weight of its battery pack, an unusually advanced construction method for a mass production car at the time, and was offered with an optional small gasoline range extender engine in some markets.
