The Senator A was the first generation of the Opel Senator, sold in Europe from 1978 as the flagship saloon of both Opel and Vauxhall. It was the last part of a joint GM programme of the 1970s, built on the V-Car platform as a long-wheelbase version of the Opel Rekord E, and complemented by the three-door fastback Opel Monza. It was meant to replace the poorly selling KAD cars, the Kapitän, Admiral and Diplomat. In the UK the Senator A and Monza were first sold as the Vauxhall Royale. The facelifted A2 followed in November 1982, going on sale in March 1983, with drag resistance down from 0.45 to 0.36, until the Senator B arrived in 1987.
