Opel Kapitän (Kapitän A, 1964 to 1968)

Automobiles

The Kapitän A was introduced in 1964 as part of the completely new KAD range of Kapitän, Admiral and Diplomat models, with the Kapitän as the base model of a three-tier line. Again there was a styling similarity with the Vauxhall Cresta PC. It was powered by the same engines as the contemporary Opel Admiral, a 2.6 or 2.8-litre inline six, and a small number even received the Chevrolet-sourced 4.6-litre V8. In late 1967 it was reworked with rub strips, new ZF steering and a collapsible steering column, and a high performance HL version of the 2.8-litre six with 140 PS became available. The KAD was considerably larger than its predecessor, which proved a hindrance in the marketplace, and sales of the Kapitän A fell sharply; up to its discontinuation in November 1968 a total of 24,249 cars left the factory.
