The Diplomat A was the first series of the Opel Diplomat, introduced in February 1964 as part of the KAD range of Kapitän, Admiral and Diplomat, which Opel called the Big Three. As the top model it was available only with a V8, first the Chevrolet small-block 283 of 4.6 litres with a two-speed Powerglide automatic and 190 PS, then from October 1966 the 5.4-litre small-block 327 with 230 PS. A Diplomat Coupé with the 327 was built by the coachbuilder Karmann from 1965 to 1967 in limited numbers, 347 in all, and cost DM 25,500, as much as seven Volkswagen Beetles. In March 1969 Opel replaced the range with new bodies.
