The Admiral A was the middle model of the KAD range of Kapitän, Admiral and Diplomat introduced by Opel in February 1964, with volume production of the Admiral beginning in May 1964. The 1964 car had a 2,605 cc straight-six OHV engine of 100 PS with self-adjusting hydraulic tappets, and from September 1965 the new 2,784 cc cam-in-head straight-six of 125 PS, which gave a top speed of 170 km/h. From 1964 to 1968 Opel built 55,876 Admirals out of 89,277 KAD cars, making it by far the most popular of the three. Only 623 had the Chevrolet-sourced V8, and the two six-cylinder versions powered more than 98 percent of the cars.
