The Versailles was introduced for 1977 as the most expensive Lincoln sedan at 11,500 dollars, priced 2,000 dollars under the Cadillac Seville but below the Continental Mark V. It was the first Lincoln with exposed headlamps since 1969 and introduced rectangular headlamps to the brand, with a Continental spare decklid bearing LINCOLN lettering. It fared poorly against the Seville, which outsold it by a three to one margin in its 1977 debut year.
