Even after the launch of the eighth generation Continental for 1988 and the anticipation of the 1990 redesign, the 1989 model year became the second most successful for the Town Car. It was the last year of the first generation, after ten years on the market, nine of them as the Town Car, relatively unchanged before the extensive redesign launched on 5 October 1989. The Town Car of the first generation used the Panther platform shared with Ford and Mercury.
