From the 2009 model year the Freelander 2 had a modified Haldex four-wheel-drive coupling, the fourth generation, in place of the third. Stop-start technology arrived in spring 2009 on the TD4 models, which became the TD4_e, with a heavy-duty starter that also acted as a generator to recover energy on braking. Until 2009 the Freelander shared the Halewood plant with the Jaguar X-Type, with which it also shared a version of Ford's front-wheel-drive platform.
