The Discovery Sport was introduced in late 2014 as the first new model of the enlarged Discovery family, announced by Gerry McGovern at the New York International Auto Show alongside the Discovery Vision concept. It replaced the Freelander, adding the option of seven seats, and was the first Discovery built with a unibody. The Euro NCAP tested it in December 2014 and gave it five stars, the safest in the Small Off-Road class. Early cars had Ford's 2.0-litre EcoBoost petrol or 2.2-litre Duratorq diesel engines.
