The 1995 model year saw the North American Defender 90 continue as the only utility Land Rover on sale in the United States and Canada, initially available only with a soft top and a structural roll cage, later also with a removable fibreglass roof panel or as a hard-top estate. The 90 was essentially the 90SV with the Range Rover's petrol V8 in place of the 200Tdi diesel, which was already certified for United States emissions. A 1995 soft-top Defender 90 was later shipped to South Africa to become the prototype of a BMW-engined version.
