Land Rover launched the Defender in North America in 1993, the first time utility Land Rovers had been sold there since 1974, though the Range Rover had been sold there since 1987. To meet United States regulations the North American Specification Defenders were heavily modified. The first batch comprised 525 Defender 110 County 4x4s, 500 for the United States and 25 for Canada, all with the 3.9-litre V8, a five-speed manual gearbox, a full external roll cage and factory air conditioning, and all but one painted Alpine white.
