1988 Land Rover Defender

Automobiles

The early turbo diesel had a reputation for poor reliability, with serious bottom-end failures and cracked pistons, and in 1988 Land Rover introduced a revised cylinder block and improved big end bearings to address it. In the same year the Rover Group, of which Land Rover was part, was privatised and came under the ownership of British Aerospace. Mechanically the Defender line was otherwise as it had been after 1986, with the 2.5-litre petrol and diesel engines, the turbo diesel and the V8.
