By 2014 the Defender was the last survivor of the traditional Land Rover design, still the body-on-frame vehicle of 1983 with the Ford 2.2-litre diesel. Its life was limited by regulations that no wholesale redesign could avoid. New pedestrian safety rules and a requirement for airbags on commercial vehicles, both due in 2015, could not be met economically. Land Rover had unveiled the DC100 concept in 2011, and the New Discovery range was shown at the 2014 New York Motor Show.
