The Defender of 2005 was the L315, unchanged in broad outline from the refined Td5 model of 2002, with the five-cylinder diesel, the XS, County and Station Wagon trims and the long list of special editions that had marked the previous years. The 300Tdi, kept in production for military Defenders, was heading for the end of production in 2006. Land Rover was owned by Ford, and a replacement engine for the Td5 was on the way for the following years.
