In 2001 the BMW-engined Defender 2.8i ended after the period from 1997 in South Africa. A total of 1,395 were built at Rosslyn near Pretoria, 656 of them Defender 90s and 739 Defender 110s, and the straight-six was the fastest production Defender ever made, reaching 100 km/h in 9.3 seconds. Elsewhere the Defender was powered by the Td5 diesel, which would be the last Land Rover engine built in-house at Solihull.
