The Td5 arrived in 1998, a new five-cylinder 2.5-litre turbodiesel with electronic control that replaced the Tdi, which could not meet the coming Euro III emissions rules, and gave 122 horsepower. For Land Rover's 50th anniversary two special editions were built, the Defender 50th, essentially a North American 90 with a 4.0-litre V8 and an automatic gearbox, of which 1,071 were made, and the Heritage, styled to recall the original Series I. The 300Tdi entered British Army service in the Green Fleet that year.
