The 1972 model year brought significant changes to the CJ-5, as American Motors began fitting its own engines, which required changes to both body and chassis, with the Torque Command straight six replacing the base four cylinder, a 232 cubic inch standard and a 258 optional, and the 304 V8 also available. The wheelbase was stretched by two and a half inches and a new box frame with six cross members was fitted, with a larger fuel tank moved under the rear.
